Forum for Developing Countries

Metrology - Trade Facilitator ?

Berlin, 25 October 2004

A Forum for Developing Countries entitled Metrology - Trade Facilitator ? was held in Berlin on 25 October 2004.

The aims of this event were:

  •   to find out the needs of developing countries in the field of metrology;
  •   to find out what is offered in terms of support;
  •   to emphasise the importance of metrology as an essential part of the technical structure for conformity assessment;
  •   to discuss arguments for the development of such an infrastructure, according to the specific needs of a country or region;
  •   to stimulate discussion and exchange of information; and
  •   to facilitate the contact between donors and metrology organisations looking for support.
  • More than 150 people attended the Forum, at which a number of prominent speakers gave presentations on specific subjects related to technical assistance in metrology, accreditation and standardisation. A simultaneous poster session was organised, at which around 40 "needs", and 20 "offers" posters were presented. The preliminary outcomes of the Forum are as follows:

  •   Some of the needs were able to be satisfied immediately by matching them with offers of support;
  •   Other needs will need longer negotiation;
  •   All posters are available on this web site (see menu on the left);
  •   Further contributions are invited, to keep this virtual Forum "alive";
  •   All presentations and actions proposed by the expert speakers are available on this web site (see menu on the left);
  •   This information should be of great help in facilitating metrology organisations' negotiations with decision makers at national and regional level, as well as with donor agencies.
